The scholarly community consists of individuals who have helped to advance research and individuals who have undermined
it. To try to minimize acts of harm, the U.S. federal government defines research misconduct. Here are the official definitions.*
-> Fabrication is making up data or results and recording or reporting them.
-> Falsification is manipulating research materials, equipment, or processes, or changing, or omitting data or
results such that the research is not accurately represented in the research record.
-> Plagiarism is appropriating and using as one's own another person's documented ideas, processes, results, or
words without giving appropriate credit, including those obtained through confidential review of others' research proposals
and manuscripts.
-> Research misconduct does not include errors of judgment, errors in recording, selection or analysis of data, or opinion.
